Hiking in Gudauri all you need to know

For simplicity I will try to more or less organise the hikes in order of easies to hardest and most popular to less popular.
In general New Gudauri is well suited to be you home base for a few days of hiking. Due to the massive amount of winter ski infrastructure there is plenty of apartments available at a reasonable price.

Lets start with my absolute favourite hike. The most beautiful nature, history and fields of flowers can be found there.

The Towers of Gudauri

This hiking trail in Gudauri, Georgia, offers an engaging experience featuring three towers and a church, all constructed in the 7th century. The trek is of medium difficulty and rewards hikers with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.

For those who prefer a less strenuous experience, there is an option to skip the uphill portion of the hike. A taxi can be called to return to Gudauri, making the journey accessible for various fitness levels.

Along the way, hikers can take a refreshing break at a mineral spring located in the Khada Valley, adding a unique touch to this scenic adventure.

Small Chrdili Hike

Experience the shortest and incredibly accessible hike, or rather a leisurely stroll, from New Gudauri to Chrdili Peak 2 viewpoint. This delightful excursion is suitable for both inexperienced hikers and families with young children. Spanning just 2 kilometers in distance and ascending a mere 80 meters in altitude, it guarantees a rewarding experience as you make your way to the captivating viewpoint.

Big Chrdili Hike

Embark on a delightful two-hour hike from the top of the gondola back to New Gudauri, covering a distance of 6 kilometers. This scenic route presents a single brief uphill section, requiring a 100-meter ascent to reach the breathtaking Chrdili Peak 1 viewpoint. From this vantage point, you’ll be treated to an awe-inspiring perspective of the Khada Valley and Gudauri. Continue along the Chrdili Ridge to the slightly lower second peak, before making your way back to New Gudauri. This captivating journey promises unforgettable sights and experiences.

or the mostly downhill version of Big Chrdili Hike

Top of Gondola to Kudebi

Embark on a proper hiking adventure as you ascend 300 meters to reach the majestic summit of Kudebi. This trail should not be underestimated, as it leads you to an impressive altitude of 3007 meters above sea level. The route is relatively easy to follow, primarily consisting of a gravel road. Prepare for a 1.5-hour ascent to reach the summit, where breathtaking views await. After taking in the scenic beauty, allow approximately 45 minutes for the return journey. This hike promises a rewarding experience for those seeking an exhilarating challenge and stunning natural vistas.

Khada Gorge Round Trip

This can also be done starting in New Gudauri maybe even better this way but for a bit less altitude to climbe I recommend to start at Top of Gondola. This trail can be overgrown a bit depending on the season. Make sure to bring good shoes. Khada valley amazing landscape. find the Mufhure Church that hast collapsed recently. then climb back to Chrdili Peak 2 and down to New Gudauri. Carefull this is a very long hike but you can have a car pick you up on the gravel road down to the river if you get tired. Just have a driver ready.

Friendship Monument

Enjoy a short and pleasant hike that takes about 1 to 2 hours. The route is 6 kilometers long, with a gentle 200-meter climb and then a downhill walk. Most of the trail follows a gravel road, making it easy and comfortable for hikers of all levels.

Your destination is the Friendship Monument Viewpoint, where you’ll be rewarded with amazing views of the Aragvi Valley and the stunning Sherkhota Mountain. Take your time to enjoy the scenery and snap some photos.

After the hike, you can relax at the nearby Sherkhota Restaurant, named after the mountain. It’s a great spot to enjoy a tasty meal or a refreshing drink while taking in the mountain views.

When you’re ready to head back, it’s easy to grab a taxi for a smooth return to where you started. This short hike is a great mix of nature, views, and good food—all in just a couple of hours.

Sadzele

Hiking to the top of Sadzele (3,300 meters) is a rewarding adventure. As you climb higher, you’ll start to see the incredible Mount Kazbegi in the distance, standing tall at 5,050 meters. It’s a beautiful and powerful sight.

Step by step, the views get better. The higher you go, the more of the surrounding mountains and valleys you can see. When you reach the summit of Sadzele, the view of Mount Kazbegi is truly amazing. The size and beauty of the landscape will leave a lasting impression.

Take some time at the top to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and take in the views. The hard work of the hike is worth it once you see the breathtaking scenery.

Tip: Try to go on a clear day so you can get the best view of Mount Kazbegi and the whole Gudauri area. It’s a moment you won’t forget.

Mount Kazbeg – from Trinity Church to Altihut to Arsha

This beautiful hike takes you through some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the Kazbegi region, combining iconic sights with peaceful mountain trails and remote valleys.

A great way to start your adventure is by spending the night in Gudauri, a scenic mountain town that’s well-suited for relaxing before the hike. In the morning, take a taxi to Gergeti Trinity Church (2,170 meters), the trailhead for your journey.

From the church, follow the well-marked trail as it gradually climbs toward Altihut 3014, a modern and cozy mountain hut at 3,014 meters. The hike to Altihut takes around 3–4 hours, passing through open alpine meadows and offering dramatic views of Mount Kazbegi and its glacier.

You have two options here:
Continue the hike the same day through the quiet and wild Toti Valley down to the village of Arsha, or
Stay overnight at Altihut for a more relaxed experience. If you choose to stay, make sure to book your reservation in advance, as space is limited, especially during peak season.

If you continue the hike the same day or on the next morning, the trail leads gently down into Toti Valley, a peaceful and lesser-known area surrounded by cliffs and green hills. After a few hours of descent, you’ll arrive in Arsha, a small village in the valley below.

Be sure to arrange a taxi pickup in Arsha in advance for a smooth return to Gudauri or Stepantsminda.
